Parking Rules To Remember Before Hitting The Road
There are a lot of parking rules to remember before hitting the road or putting on your driving shoes. Here are important rules that will help you stay out of harm’s way.
Parking at roadsides
As much as possible, use off-street parking sites as well as parking bays marked with white-coloured lines. In case there’s a need to stop your car while on the road, proceed to stop at the roadside but make sure you are in the same direction as the flow of traffic.
Make sure to park closest to the side. If you spot a vehicle in the same roadside with a blue badge in it, don’t stay too close to it. You could inconvenience the owner.
Once you are settled, turn off the engine and lights. Pull the handbrake before alighting from the car. Check for incoming cars or cyclists. If all is clear, alight from the car and lock your door.
No parking zones
Do not park or stop on hard shoulders designated as motorways, on road areas allotted for pedestrians, on areas marked with lines, within clearways and bays intended for taxis, on urban clearways (except when loading or unloading passengers), on roads with white-coloured double lines (except when loading or unloading passengers and goods), on cyclists lanes, and areas marked with red-coloured lines.
Avoid parking in areas intended for a class of motorists namely holders of a blue badge and residents.
Do not park or stop on a school’s entryway, access roads for emergency vehicles, bus or taxi stops, approaches to tramway crossings, junctions, hump bridge, on curbs intended for handicapped persons, and in front of entrances to private or public properties.
Pavements in London aren’t supposed to be parked on except when there are visible signs allowing conditional parking. The primary reason for this is that your car may pose risks to pedestrians who may be visually impaired or are wheelchair bound. You will also cause inconvenience to pedestrians who happen to be pushing prams.
A note for blue badge holders.
Blue badge program was created to assist persons with mobility issues.Holders are allowed free parking on designated bays as well as some degree of exemptions on parking time. In some regions, holders are also allowed to park or stop on areas marked with yellow-coloured lines. However, blue badge holders aren’t allowed to park or stop on specific areas like loading bays or bays allotted for permit holders.
Controlled parking zones
Strictly follow signages within controlled parking zones. Typically, signs tell which times of the day waiting limits are in full force.
Vehicles carrying goods that weigh beyond 7.5 tons aren’t allowed to park on pavements and borders except when permission is granted by appropriate authorities. Loading and unloading are allowed but drivers aren’t allowed to leave the vehicle.
Night time parking
Night time parking on roadsides at a position opposite the traffic flow isn’t allowed. Parking lights must be turned on while parked on a lay-by along roads where a greater than 30 mph speed limit is imposed.
Parking lights may be turned off if the weight of the parked vehicle is 2500 kg and below or if the vehicle is a motorcycle or bicycle. This applies to vehicles parked on a road or lay-by with a 30 mph or less imposed speed limit and if the vehicle is away from junctions by at least 32 feet.
Parked trailer trucks and other vehicles carrying long projecting loads are not covered by this ruling and thus should keep the lights on.
